The capital cities of Stockholm and Helsinki have a long tradition and commitment to excellence in the decorative arts and design. This course examines the primary themes and ideas in Scandinavian design and culture, dating from the 17th through 20th centuries, by focusing on the material and built environment including: interiors, textiles, ceramics, architecture, metalwork, industrial design, glass, and more. Students will visit sites and collections in and around Stockholm such as the major art and design museums, as well as Drottningholm Palace, Skokloster, and the Gustavsbergs porslinsmuseum. There will also be a trip to Dalarna with a visit to the Carl and Karin Larsson home in Sundborn. Works by noted Swedish architects and designers Gunnar Asplund and Carl Malmsten, among others, will be explored in depth. Students will travel by overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki, the 2012 European Design Capital, and the course will take advantage of the many cultural offerings and design activities taking place throughout the city. We will also visit important Finish collections and sites including: The National Design Museum, the Alvar Aalto home and studio, the Marimekko fabric printing works and the Arabia factory and museum. There will also be a day trip to Noormarkku where students will visit Aalto's iconic Villa Mairea, The Paimio Sanatorium, and The Resurrection Chapel by Erik Bryggman. Note: Due to the small size of this seminar, friends and family may not join the class for lectures, walks, or site visits. The course is moderately physically challenging and requires hours of walking and standing. (3 credits)
