This course offers an immersion into the built environment of Paris-its monuments, museums, urban fabric, rooms, gardens, early modern masterpieces, art, culture, and innovations. The city will be the classroom and drawing will be the primary tool for discovery. Drawing methods practiced on-site and include orthographic correspondence, perspective drawing, composite/layered drawing, sketchbook work, and experimental mixed media work that will capture the experience of being in Paris. Conversations will incorporate contemporary and historical views, as sites shift from medieval to modern, and drawings move from documentation to analysis and invention. It is recommended that students without any previous drawing experience take the two-week course: Drawing in Paris, College/Adult level, in addition to this course to build the necessary skills. (2 credits)

Students in this course will gain a general understanding of the fashion industry and current digital fashion marketing trends. With Paris serving as the backdrop, students will find their own inspiration from the streets, fashion exhibitions, retail districts, and learn how to translate these into marketing messages. The class puts an emphasis on written work with individual trend spotting blogs, and team projects including developing a customer marketing strategy. Students must bring a laptop and a digital camera with software to upload images. (2 credits)

Students will develop a professional portfolio of images as they examine the rich tradition of French photography through the exploration of urban landscape, portraiture, and reportage. The portfolio can be used for entrance for college admissions or for continued academic research in the field of photography. The course covers historical and contemporary photographic practice as students learn to convey concepts and explore topics with a greater depth and articulation. Classes include on-site shoots, museum visits, editing in the digital lab, classroom lectures and critiques. Because all work is done in digital format, students must bring a 35mm SLR digital camera with manual settings and laptop computer. (4 credits)

Classes meet outdoors at locations of historic and cultural significance. Drawing is the primary medium studied, with painting being the main vehicle in understanding color interaction. Using the city as a starting point, students utilize the landscape of Paris as a way to create and solve visual problems. Students examine the relationships between technical skills, conceptual ideas, and the creative decisions that they make. Museum visits and discussions examine art and design history. This course is recommended for students who are building a portfolio for college admission, as well as those interested in strengthening observational drawing and painting skills. (4 credits)
